Yes! The Govt. had to bow today before the students of Jadavpur University. At last the Vice-Chancellor of JU decided to RESIGN!!! And, all this could happen because of the indomitable determination and spirit of the students. Salute to all of you who were a part of this struggle.

India And The New Millennium

We shall now come down to our country to see what prevents her from enjoying the benefits of a millennium. It is undeniable that India is an overpopulated country. We can point out the rude fact that only recently her population has crossed the limit of hundred crores. It is not easy, indeed, it is very hard to provide food, clothes, accommodation, conveyance, medicine, education and profitable work to so many people. Secondly, the country suffers from heavy burden of extensive unemployment. Thirdly, corruption is widespread, affecting the people from top to bottom. Fourthly, there is extreme slowness and wastage in the government department and unbearable delay in the execution of legal matters. Finally, there are both external and internal hostilities which have a very bad effect on the peace and prospects of the country.  

In order to reap the benefits of the millennium our country should pay utmost attention to decrease the population. Besides normal ways of employment, co-operatives and self employment should be encouraged side by side with facilities for easy loan, wider marketing, greater job training and exploration of newer and non-traditional types work. Again, stringent measures are necessary to stop corruption, siphoning off of huge black money through better methods and exertions of pressures and influences to ignore dishonest and immoral activities. An all-out effort should be made to let government and legal machinery run smoothly and promptly and disciplinary actions must be taken against those who try to slacken such machinery. Internal peace will prevail only when the people living in different regions will feel that they get due justice and are not maltreated. External harmony will have to be created through diplomatic means and ways of economic co-operation instead of spending lots and lots of money in the name of strengthening defence and safety and money saved on this account will have to be spent for educational health, research, employment-oriented and other developmental purposes. Only then will the general public receive the benefits of a millennium.  

Match Fixing - A Disgrace To Cricket

Till now, cricket had a glorious name in the world of games. People often say " it is no cricket" to indicate that the stated thing is not fair. They still utter the names of  Bradman and Ranji with love and respect. Names of many other cricketers like Sachin Tendulkar,  Sourav Ganguly, Sunil Gavaskar, Ravi Shastri, Kapil Dev are mentioned whenever there arises a need for giving examples of honest and respectable players.  

Unfortunately, the days of glorious cricket seem to have departed from the arena of games and sports. The main culprit for blackening the fair name of cricket is match fixing, a practice which has spread ignoring the boundaries of nations and continents. Match fixing affects both the match and the player. It settles before the game is played which team shall be the winner. Likewise, it fixes the score of a player after which he must not make any attempt to gain a single point. You will certainly want to know what that factor is that exercises such powerful control over the result of a match or the score of a player. The amount which is offered is so huge that it will stagger the imagination of an ordinary man. Cricket is called the game of uncertainties; its results cannot be predicted before-hand. It is so exciting and enjoyable only because of the uncertainty involved in it. But, where is the romance if the outcome of the match is decided well before its start? Where is its charm if a player is asked in a dictatorial way to score this far and no more? If cricket actually comes down to this, the spectators have every right to complain that they have been cheated. Nobody can blame them if they demand the refund of their ticket money. Nobody can find fault with them if they turn their attention from cricket and focus it on some other game. Of course match fixing is not done openly but secretly, and thousands of dollars change hangs on account of this. The bookies give a large amount of money to the players to let them play according to their wishes. Then they ask other persons to bet money on the expected outcome of the match and they win, while others lose. 

We are of the opinion that since the contract between cricketers and bookies take place verbally, no tangible written proof can be found against the former. However, many things will be unearthed if C.B.I and the Income Tax Directorate work together. The bank accounts, lockers and business of their suspected players must be thoroughly searched. It is alleged cricketers have already deposited their ill gotten grains in banks of Britain, Dubai, Hong Kong and Singapore. Only a thorough investigation will unearth the huge black money involved in cricket betting and match fixing. 

Can Computers Replace Teachers?

The latest innovation of technology is the computer and today, its best utility can be seen in the process of imparting education specially through e- classes or net classes where one can be updated at one's own wish. 

Undoubtedly, the computer is adept at solving complex mechanisms but the question lies- Can it be really superior to the human brain that has invented it? Perhaps, the memory of a computer may be challenged with that of a human brain- its novelty, uniqueness, and wit maybe beyond comprehension, but, can it really match the passions, feelings, emotions and sentiments of a human teacher? The careful consideration, sympathetic, understanding, mutual reciprocation, exchanges of affections and concern delivered by a human teacher can never

be replaced by the machine. Indeed, it's true that the teacher's foremost duty is to teach- impart lessons, provide solutions in which the computer is unparallel but then, who will imbibe within the student values and ideals, instill him with courage, fortitude and confidence? The patience of a teacher, who best understands his students, can never be matched with that of a computer. 

Computer is undoubtedly a sophisticated machine but it is

again a proof of human excellence, human wit and understanding and hence, surely computers can never replace the human teacher whose brain is always on a continuous search for new ideas, noble concepts which he uses to make the computer more sophisticated, exact and precise. 

Are students of today losing values as an adverse effect of technology?

Values v/s Technology

Do you think students of today are losing values as an adverse effect of technology? Well, advancement of technology leads to progress. But, does it clash with the value system? Comparison is like a dispute between the traditional and the modern; values are age-old, technology is innovative. Hence, man succumbs to the luring effects of technology. 

Values mark our existence, represent culture, reveal regard, etiquette, courtesy and formal manners. Values increase self esteem, develops self respect, confidence and refined culture within one - teaches man basic concepts such as punctuality, discipline, humility, forgiveness, honesty, generosity, liberal mindedness, obedience, compromise and co-operation. It bridges the gap between two generations and prevents a man from straying aside. The path of righteousness and virtue is imbibed within a man through values. Well readers, you all have heard this saying "Manners maketh a man". Values refrain one from crime and corruption, makes us caring and concerned for the old, weak and neglected, helps us to cherish ideals and set up a positive attitude towards life. values keep man away from negative vices, attractions, enticements and such other forbidden pleasures. They cultivate the characteristic traits of an ideal human being. 

Technology, however progressive, clashes against values- makes us more self oriented, self centered and egoistic. Just think of it readers! Nowadays, one makes friends depending upon his cell phone or iPod. The more costly your phone is, the more number of friends you get. Your character doesn't make a difference at all. Previously, people used to love others an use things, but nowadays, the love things and use people. Just think of it! Today's lovers can't even confess their love, rather they are using all sorts of social networking sites. Is love so cheap? The day has come when "love happens through broadband speed" and gets logged out very easily. The lures of technology indulges us with such sophistication, pleasure and luxury that we often ridicule age old values- such values as showing concern for the old and neglected through letters have been done away with the mobile technology that fails to pour emotions into words. Technology entices man in such ways that he becomes extravagant and even indulges in crimes to get the benefits of it. The dream of a high- class life makes him negligent towards values and even he does not look into the affordability of his burdened parents. Herein, technology encumbles  upon values with sophisticated precision and attractive luxury. It makes a victim of many and tramples values. 

In this regard, we must admit that technology is as important as orientation of any race as values and we can't afford to sacrifice one at the cost of the other. Therefore, we must make the best usage of both for the benefit of society and for the greater improvement of the spirit.   

Money Is More Necessary Than Brains

The growing changes in today's world has made man materialistic, with a gradual concern for money, which they believe symbolizes power and prestige in society. With this trend, the value of the essence of true learning, intellectual power is deteriorating and is on the gradual decline. 

       

      Is money worth brains? The question may haunt philosophers, philanthropists and intellectuals of the present day. Strangely enough, a man who has money, is honored, treated with dignity and esteem and valued in society. However, the question remains that can money supersede the human brain; the seat of knowledge that nurtures within it the power of learning, discoveries, inventions, noble literary thoughts and the spirit of true education. Can the brain be replaced by money? It maybe an issue for a heated argument. But then, even people with money have to bow down before intellectual power, before the seat of knowledge and surrender in submission. Who can ignore the literary works of  Tagore, the achievements of Shakespeare, the lyricism of Shelly or the spontaneity of Wordsworth, men of intellectual learning, who are rather more acknowledged for their brain than their material wealth. Probably Bill Gates maybe the world's richest tycoon but there can be no doubt that Shakespeare's literary works are richer in their content, a treasure house of knowledge that can never come to an end like material riches. 

Hence, money maybe needed for survival, essential to meet the needs of the present day but surely none can deny the power of literary knowledge and the superiority of the brain- the powerhouse of all knowledge.
